No promises. No guarantees.
I was raised in a time when the typical American worker began and ended his career with the same company. I was taught that the company was committed to nurturing, developing and rewarding its employees for loyalty and a job well done. Well, over time I learned a different lesson: you are the only one you can count on.
My first stop out of college was with a computer company, and I felt fortunate to get such a lucrative job so quickly. I worked hard to prove myself to my employers, and my tenure there lasted eleven years. At some point, the government acquired controlling interest in the company, interfered with its management, then proceeded to shut it down. Even when there was a buyer for the government's share, they refused to sell. They were concerned that the company might recover without their interference, and that would not show well for their efforts. My position with the company ended, along with 85 co-workers, when the company closed its doors.
No promises. No guarantees.
My experience from the first job paved the way for the second. This was a better situation than the first, and I was employed there for thirteen years. I had proven myself as a reliable and productive worker, but a change of management was all it took to bring this to a close. The new managers decided they didn't know what I could do for them. I left in desperate search of more supportive and creative management.
No promises. No guarantees.
My desperation blinded my common sense and led me to my next position - an accident waiting to happen. This was a very small and failing company, though it was not represented as such during my interviews. An unhealthy and abusive work environment, inconsistent support and untrustworthy finances marked this period in my career. Mercifully this ended after less than a year, but I learned valuable lessons about working for others.
